Licensing Requests

Commercial Use

Licensing terms and rates apply to any audio content that will be posted on a commercial platform, or any content that promotes a company, product, person, production, for-profit project, or any use with with brand associations, including social media posts. Due to the commercialization of online music platforms, musical sampling is considered a commercial use as noted below.

Simple test: Does this production promote a company or product, or will it be used for a commercial entertainment or sales purposes? Does a social media post contain branded products? If so, a commercial license will most likely be required.

Email us with the following information:

  • Type of use (musical, advertising, commercial filmmaking, etc.)
  • Name or link to the material proposed to be sampled.
  • The duration of the content to be incorporated into your work.
  • Your name (and agency, company, band, or project) and email address.
  • A very brief description of the planned production including talent or themes.
  • For a call back please include your website URL and phone number, and a good time of day to call.

Major productions or time sensitive projects, please email mark@alanwatts.org

Creative and educational use requests include research, papers, stage productions separate from publishing or posting music, and don’t include product or brand promotions.

We are inspired by they way these works have been celebrated and brought to life in the culture, and naturally there are respectful and legal limitations to be observed when using his work. Since the beginning under his guidance, all of Alan Watts’ speeches and videos have been covered by copyright, and permission from the Alan Watts Org is required for their use. We feel it’s important that this be a curated community effort. Also protecting Alan’s material from over-use and monetization by profiteers ensures that our archive can continue to do the important work of restoring and preserving the recordings, and making them available in new forms including podcasts, and web courses.

Creative use has become more complicated in recent years as artists’ and musicians’ work is monetized on digital platforms that track and limit users with content identification tools, and although these tools are intended to make copyright management easier, they also lead to false claims when artists claim sampled works as original compositions. In response to these changing conditions, we have defined licensing categories, ranging from purely creative to musical to commercial for allowing the use of these talks, and each has different guidelines. At a minimum, we ask that when you use an extract even for personal use that you include the title of the original source talk since people are curious and want to where to hear more. If that information is not included, people will invariably contact us and ask for us to search for it, which takes a lot of time.
We welcome conversations with creators and educators, and hope you’ll reach out to us with your innovative ideas. We’ve created collaborative programs on YouTube and elsewhere that honor your efforts as a creative professional. Each day we are reminded of the impact of my Alan’s lectures, and look forward to helping the next generation of educators and creators re-imagine his work.

Asteya

A sanskrit word, Asteya refers to the virtue of non-stealing, and is one of the five yamas or moral laws found in the Yoga Sutras.
Asteya means not only to not to steal from others, but also not to steal from oneself, for as Alan Watts pointed out, the meaning of karma is doing. or one’s own doing.

Alan Watts & Artificial Intelligence

We are asking that the likeness of Alan Watts not be used for AI projects or to create a voice likeness. Alan’s message is one of the few deep keels in our culture and the source of healing and hope for millions and millions of people.

As somebody interested in these things, we trust you will understand the profound potential for Alan Watts and AI to go profoundly wrong in a way that cannot be remedied or retrieved. Once that voice can no longer trusted to be authentic, his words, wisdom and warmth may be lost to future generations.
